Blurb Description: Flynn: At first we were almost strangers. But ever since I moved to New York, Amos was the one person I could count on. And together we were there for Poppy. (I mean, what kind of parents leave their kid to be raised by a nanny?) I just didn’t expect to fall for him—and I never expected him to leave us.
Amos: I thought I was the only one who felt it. I told myself it was because we were spending so much time together—taking care of Poppy and all. But that night, I could tell she felt it, too. And I freaked out—you’re not supposed to fall for your stepsister. So I ran away to boarding school. I should have told her why I was leaving, but every time I tried, it felt like a lie.
One missed flight was about to change their lives forever….
THIS COVER IS GORGEOUS, and it's pretty much the first thing that struck me about this book. I've finished reading it, and it's STILL the thing I think about the most.

What I expected this book to be about: A Meet Cute fluffy romance set in an airport due to a delayed layover. (I somehow glazed over the fact that they were step-siblings in when I was reading the description)

What this book was about: Three slightly spoils Upper East Side step-siblings and how they run away from a vacation. Also, two of them are in love but won't admit it and their younger sister has OCD and anxiety.

What I currently feel about this book: NEUTRAL? I feel like the things I liked and the things I disliked evened each other out and I'm left stuck in the middle. Let me explain further:

THINGS I LIKED:

1. Disneyland: YES FOR DISNEYLAND MAKING AN APPEARANCE IN THIS BOOK. I've been to two different Disneylands in my life -one in Orlando and one in Hong Kong - and I ADORED both of them. It truly made me happy to see "The Happiest Place on Earth" in such a book.

2. The Backdrop and the Fluffy Book: There's always time for a fun contemporary in the middle of a hectic like, and to some extent, Layover was it. I also haven't read many books set in Los Angeles and I LOVED the descriptions and the vibe it added to the book.

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE:

1. Playing House: Amos and Flynn, the two step siblings, were honestly playing house with their younger sibling, Poppy. Both of them pretended to be Poppy's parents and they were in love with each other but didn't admit and and IT ALL GAVE OFF A VERY WEIRD VIBE. Yes, I read a book set in L.A, and now I use the word Vibe a lot.

2. Slut Shaming + The Not Like Other Girls Crap: I DID NOT LIKE AMOS' CHARACTER. Here are some instances why:

--- When girls wear clothes he things are 'inappropriate' they are all SLUTS WHO ARE TRYING TOO HARD. Man, SHUT UP, SIT DOWN AND LET GIRLS WEAR WHAT THEY WANT TO.

--- When his step sister and love interest has consensual sex and then comes home the next morning, HE LOCKS HER OUT AND STARES AT HER THROUGH THE DOOR, REFUSING TO LET HER COME IN BECAUSE HE WANTS HER TO WALLOW IN HER SHAME.

3. Rich Kids Galore: THIS BOOK WAS FILLED WITH A RICH, PRIVILEGED BUNCH OF SIBLINGS, that claimed their lives were so hard but needed a reality check.

--- Logic: When your parents are taking you in a cruise/ vacation to break some bad news, DUMP YOUR EXPENSIVE PHONES IN THE TRASH AND RUN AWAY AND NOT RESPOND WHEN YOUR PARENTS ARE FRANTICALLY EMAILING YOU. #Responsible

--- Not realise that your KID SISTER NEEDS MEDS, AND BE FOCUSED ON YOUR OWN ANGST SO MUCH THAT YOU LOSE HER TWICE .

--- Steal the VERY EXPENSIVE car and CREDIT CARD of the boy who took you in after you ran away to go to Disneyland because you know your parents can pay him back. No problem. Just a little bit of IDENTITY THEFT AND FRAUD AND THIEVERY.

I mean, come to think of it, I'm probably not as neutral as I once claimed after all the ranting. I apologise for my own confusion.

It's a mediocre book with a BEAUTIFUL cover that I'm just not sure what I feel about. Maybe that should tell you something? 2.75 Stars.

Amy Andelson & Emily Meyer worked together for 10 years on  coming-of-age movies and TV shows such as Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List, Step Up 3D, and a contemporary adaptation of The Great Gatsby. LAYOVER is thier first young adult novel.

What do you feel about books with romantic relationships between family members, if they're not related by blood?
I'm unsure where I stand, but I would LOVE to hear your thoughts.

What are some of your cover buys? I have this intense NEED to request books with beautiful covers.

Lush, Magical, Addicting // REVIEW: The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

Blurb Description: The fourth and final installment in the spellbinding series from the irrepressible, #1 New York Times bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater.
All her life, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love's death. She doesn't believe in true love and never thought this would be a problem, but as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she's not so sure anymore.
There's always something nostalgic about coming to the end of a series. You've been waiting years and years for this moment, and when you flip past the last page, you honestly can't believe it's over.

This is currently me, with The Raven King. It's so strange to think that a series I've followed for years is OVER, because it certainly doesn't feel like it. I read the last 200 pages in one fell swoop, and it just got over SO FAST, you know? I keep hoping that someone will pop up from behind a bush and say "It's not over! WE GOT YOU GOOD! Here's the next 10 books."

I'll move out of my slightly delusional, slightly denial filled phase and tell you what I thought about the book:

MY THOUGHTS:

Image result for the raven king1. I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS POSSIBLE FOR MAGGIE STIEFVATER'S WRITING TO GET BETTER BUT HOLY COW IT DID. From the very first page, she gorgeously drew us back into her magically realistic world and I WAS ABSOLUTELY ENTRANCED.

2. My main problem with book three, Blue Lily, Lily Blue was the PACE. It was just so slow with so many unnecessary tiny plot developments and I was scared that The Raven King would be the same. IT WASN'T. I was sucked in from the first page with some delicious writing and plot lines and just the anticipation that THIS WAS THE BOOK WE'D FIND GLENDOWER.

3. I officially have a new favourite couple in YA Literature that take me breath away every time they interact or kiss or hang out. SPOILER:

"Ronan wrenched his tie loose. "You working after school?""With a dreamer."He held Ronan's gaze over his locker door. School had improved....Adam smiled cheerily. Roman would start wars and burn cities over that true smile, elastic and amiable. "

***
"His feelings for Adam were an oil spill; he'd let them overflow and now there wasn't a damn place in the ocean that wouldn't catch fire if he dropped a match."

LIKE I SAID. I FELL, AND I FELL HARD. Please tell me this means that Adam will be there in the Ronan Trilogy because NEED. HELLO? I will combust into a puddle of happiness and feels to have an entire TRILOGY about these two.

4. The ending was very... Abrupt. There was a particular revelation about one of the Raven Boys that was SHOCKING but other than that, I found it sub-par and lacking the greatness I expected from it. Still, with Adam and Ronan and my heart soaring, I honestly didn't care much for this aspect of the ending.

5. I don't know WHAT I felt about certain characters including the Laumoniers, Piper Greenmantle and ESPECIALLY Henry Cheng. I sort of begrudged them a space in the story, but I did t care for them at all.

Let's be honest, I'm TRASH for this series. It's one of the best out there, in my opinion BECAUSE it's so different. I cannot recommend it enough because when you fall, you will FALL HARD AND THERE WILL BE NO COMING BACK AND, really, ISN'T THAT WHAT YOU WANT ANYWAY?

The Raven Cycle is an addicting, magical, lush, spellbinding quartet that will leave you gasping for more. 5 stars.

All of Maggie Stiefvater's life decisions have been based around her inability to be gainfully employed. Talking to yourself, staring into space, and coming to work in your pajamas are frowned upon when you're a waitress, calligraphy instructor, or technical editor (all of which she's tried), but are highly prized traits in novelists and artists. Blurb Description:Ellie Frias disappeared long before she vanished.
Tormented throughout middle school, Ellie begins her freshman year with a new look: she doesn't need to be popular; she just needs to blend in with the wallpaper.
But when the unthinkable happens, Ellie finds herself trapped after a brutal assault. She wasn't the first victim, and now she watches it happen again and again. She tries to hold on to her happier memories in order to get past the cold days, waiting for someone to find her.
The problem is, no one searches for a girl they never noticed in the first place.

TRIGGER WARNINGS: Rape, Sexual Assault, Abuse, Physical Abuse

I find it hardest to talk about books that talk about sexual assault.

I’m female, and just with being female I live in a dangerous world where I must dress right, sit right, talk right, be demure, be assertive, be kind, be everything, really. I can’t go to parties without at least two other girls, I can’t walk on the road from when the sun begins to set and I can’t wear clothes that are an inch too short. It’s a terrifying way to grow up, being overly aware of your body and your surroundings at all times.

Sexual Assault terrifies me as well. It’s the most primal kind of violation one human being can inflict upon another and the #MeToo movement broke my heart, just seeing the number of women that have face that kind of violation, and we are looking only at the minority that did speak out.

While it’s hard to talk about books like I Stop Somewhere, The Nowhere Girls and Asking for It, they are SUCH IMPORTANT BOOKS for girls everywhere and I am automatically drawn to them.

MY THOUGHTS ON I Stop Somewhere:

1.       This book was intensely addicting. It terrified me, and yet it had me hooked. I was SO hooked that it took me just a handful of hours to read the ENTIRE thing and then I was left desperate for more.

2.       THIS. BOOK. BROKE. MY. HEART. I Stop Somewhere revolves around fifteen year old Ellie Friars and the first boy she loved, who turned out to be every girl’s deepest fears wrapped with a perfect bow. Ellie was the kind of girl who blended in. She kept to herself, didn’t have any kind of social media or friends and so when a beautiful boy notices her, she can’t help but all for him. You know the story from there. It’s so fucking unfortunate, but you, a human in this dangerous world, already know how this goes.

3.       Despite knowing where this book was taking me, THIS WAS RIDICULIOUSLY HARD TO GET THROUGH. I’m not talking about the book, but the subject manner. It was HARD, reading this emotionally turbulent, deeply intimate book on rape, survival, togetherness and what it means to be a girl.

4.       One of my favourite parts in the novel was when all of the victims came together, just for each other, just to talk about what was done to them and find solace in other girls who were assaulted as well.
This is one of the shortest reviews I’ve written recently, or feels like it because I haven’t gotten out nearly enough about what needs to be said on the issues this book handles. Nothing I can say says it all better than what I Stop Somewhere does, but I will warn you that it is a hard book to get through.

It’s one of those books you need to read.

It’s one of those books every girl out there needs to read.

Pick it up for your friends, daughters, nieces, sisters and also, for yourself. All of us girls need to be reading books like this.

Blurb Description: FORGED IN BATTLE...FROM THE DUST OF THE ARENA...A LEGEND WILL RISE
The action-packed tale of a 17-year-old warrior princess and a handsome gladiator who dared take on the Roman Republic―and gave rise to the legend of Spartacus...
For teens who love strong female protagonists in their fantasy and historical fiction, Blood and Sand is a stirring, yet poignant tale of two slaves who dared take on an empire by talented debut author C. V. Wyk.
Roma Victrix. The Republic of Rome is on a relentless march to create an empire―an empire built on the backs of the conquered, brought back to Rome as slaves.
Attia was once destined to rule as the queen and swordmaiden of Thrace, the greatest warrior kingdom the world had seen since Sparta. Now she is a slave, given to Xanthus, the Champion of Rome, as a sign of his master’s favor. Enslaved as a child, Xanthus is the preeminent gladiator of his generation.
Against all odds, Attia and Xanthus form a tentative bond. A bond that will spark a rebellion. A rebellion that threatens to bring the Roman Republic to its end―and gives rise to the legend of Spartacus...
The story continues in Fire and Ash, coming in 2019 from Tor Teen.

WELL HELLO NEW ADDITION TO MY FAVOURITE BOOKS EVER LIST.

Let’s be honest – you can hear all kinds of GREAT things about a book through hype or from your favourite reviewers, but everybody’s reading experience is personal. Which is why, despite ONLY having read four and five star reviews about Blood and Sand, I was a little skeptical going in. (I’m skeptical about everything, though. #PessimistLife)

And yet, C.V. Wyk’s debut novel BLEW MY MIND and had me SERIOUSLY INVESTED in her characters and at the edge of my seat, waiting for more.

Which reminds me, IF SOMEONE COULD KINDLY HAND ME THE SEQUEL NOW, IT WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED. HONESTLY.

Let’s break this down. MY THOUGHTS:

1.       The pace of this book was STUNNING. It was fast paced but not brutal and there was never a dull moment. I loved who C.V. Wyk unravelled and created this world, made us fall for her characters and their need to be free from their chains and IT WAS SUCH AN INSPIRING, WONDEROUS, BRILLIANT STORY.

2.       I ABSOLUTELY LOVED ATTIA AND HER WARRIOR SPIRIT. She was truly an epic, unafraid, weapon wielding badass who let absolutely NOTHING stand in her way and nothing dampen who she was. Her pain was raw, her healing from her tragedy was beautiful and GOD SHE WAS JUST SUCH A WONDEROUS CHARACTER TO FALL IN LOVE WITH.

3.       This book was set in Rome and there were Gladiator brothers, scandals, politics, slaves and everything FELT SO AUTHENTIC AND YET, there was no brutality, making this book suitable for younger readers as well. Also, SPARTACUS WAS FEMALE. THIS BOOK HAD A FEMALE BADASS REBEL AND UGH IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL.

4.       The fierce undefeated gladiator, Xanthus, who is also the Champion of Rome was an ADORABLE MUFFIN AT HEART and it took me all of one chapter in his point of view to fall for him. I LOVED HIS PEACEFUL SPIRIT, HIS LOYALTY and most of all, HIS RESPECTFULNESS TOWARDS ATTIA. Yes for boys in literature that show that nothing is MORE IMPORTANT THAN CONSENT.

5.       The ending, the last scene and WHAT IT ALL MEANS FOR BOOK TWO was mind blowing. I also don’t THINK that a certain aspect of the ending will remain in book two and I’m really hoping for that.

6.       The only minus point to this book was the AMOUNT OF SECONDARY CHARACTERS (like Xanthus’ gladiator brothers) that were introduced so fast, I didn’t get to know them and I BARELY remember their names. (There was a dude with ‘a’ and another with ‘I’? I don’t KNOW?)

Should you read this book?! YES. RIGHT NOW. GO. READ. IT.

An absolute masterpiece from a debut author that will make you fall in love, make you hope, leave you in awe and inspired by it's wonderful cast. 5 GLOWING, SWORD SHAPED STARS.

An Essential Book For Girls Everywhere // ARC Review: The Nowhere Girls by Amy Reed

Blurb Description: Three misfits come together to avenge the rape of a fellow classmate and in the process trigger a change in the misogynist culture at their high school transforming the lives of everyone around them in this searing and timely story.
Who are the Nowhere Girls?
They’re everygirl. But they start with just three:
Grace Salter is the new girl in town, whose family was run out of their former community after her southern Baptist preacher mom turned into a radical liberal after falling off a horse and bumping her head.
Rosina Suarez is the queer punk girl in a conservative Mexican immigrant family, who dreams of a life playing music instead of babysitting her gaggle of cousins and waitressing at her uncle’s restaurant.
Erin Delillo is obsessed with two things: marine biology and Star Trek: The Next Generation, but they aren’t enough to distract her from her suspicion that she may in fact be an android.
When Grace learns that Lucy Moynihan, the former occupant of her new home, was run out of town for having accused the popular guys at school of gang rape, she’s incensed that Lucy never had justice. For their own personal reasons, Rosina and Erin feel equally deeply about Lucy’s tragedy, so they form an anonymous group of girls at Prescott High to resist the sexist culture at their school, which includes boycotting sex of any kind with the male students.
Told in alternating perspectives, this groundbreaking novel is an indictment of rape culture and explores with bold honesty the deepest questions about teen girls and sexuality.
This book was heart-breaking and STUNNING and really dealt with rape and privilege and even feminism in the midst of it all and I was CRYING by the time I reached the end because I haven’t had a book make me feel and think as much as The Nowhere Girls did in a WHILE.

THE NOWHERE GIRLS IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT BOOK FOR GIRLS EVERYWHERE. It’s uplifting, real, heart-breaking and filled with girl power. The story itself is centred on girls from different ethnic and economic backgrounds as well as just girls with different personalities. In fact, most of the chapters are told from the point of view of ‘Us’ – that is, all these different and wonderful girls and IT WAS SO TOUCHING.

MY THOUGHTS:

Image result for the nowhere girls quotes
Graphic from Never Too Many To Read
1.       Before we go any further, this book might contain a lot of triggers from someone who is a victim of abuse, so TRIGGER WARNINGS: Rape, sexual and physical assault, sexual harassment and panic attacks.

2.       This book was INTENSE. Not only the story itself, but the descriptions that came along with it – from what all the girls banding together felt and thought to the descriptions of the abuse itself. It didn’t let up, because it was tackling such an important issue and I really appreciated the intensity.

Graphic from Never Too Many To Read
   3.       The first character we’re introduced to is Grace Salter, who is an empathetic girl that is pretty much left to her own devices who lives in the room of a girl who was raped and run out of town. Her viewpoint is harrowing and I loved the growth she went through in this book.

4.       Erin, the second girl we’re introduced to, has Asperger’s. I love that we got to know Erin outside of where she stood on the spectrum, as well as about her disease. We see how she views life and relationships and everything about her was wonderfully done.

5.       I’m still on the fence as to how I feel about the third girl – Rosina. I felt for her, definitely, but I didn’t connect with her.
Graphic from Never Too Many To Read

6.       Like I said in the beginning, though we were introduced to the world from these three girls’ viewpoints, a LOT of the book was told from the Viewpoint of “Us.” Us stands for all the girls that are a part of the town, facing different battles in their lives. They talked about double standards, choice, reputation, beliefs, experiences and SO MUCH MORE. Honestly, reading this book from an “Us” perspective made me CONNECT. It made this book heart-wrenchingly read and it broke me.

The Nowhere Girls is probably one of the MOST IMPORTANT BOOKS OUT THERE FOR TEENAGE GIRLS because it tackles the rape culture, patriarchy, double standards and misogyny and in the centre of it all, shows you how powerful girls standing by each other can be.

I could not recommend it more. This should be on all essential reading lists.

Stacking The Shelves #37 - The One Where I Should Start Studying Instead of Typing This Post

*waves rapidly and awkwardly*

I'm SUPPOSED to be studying for my exam tomorrow morning but this class NEVER FAILS IN PUTTING ME TO SLEEP and all the content is just so DRY and I am procrastinating my time away. I have FOUR exams over the next THREE days and I am not prepared for any of them. ALSO, I HAVE SUBMISSIONS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE. #CollegeIsKillingMe.

Which brings me to this moment where I decided to ignore all of the above and simply type out a blog post that was supposed to be out yesterday! (Yes, my life is a mess)

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted at Tyga's Reviews (that I always forget to link up to) and is all about ALL THE BOOKS you received that week. Let's begin:

Blood and SandFOR REVIEW:

From Macmillan International:

1. Blood and Sand by C.V.Wyk: I JUST finished reading this book yesterday and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. C.V.Wyk's debut novel has made it onto my ALL TIME FAVOURITE LIST because HOLY CRAP THIS BOOK WAS GOOD. It had all the right elements, was brilliantly paced, had great characterization and a SHOCKING ENDING that makes me want the sequel NOW.

Public Service Announcement: GET YOUR COPY OF THIS BOOK NOW.
The Brightsiders

2. The Brightsiders by Jen Wilde: Let's just call Jen Wilde QUEEN OF BOOKS WITH GIRLS THAT HAVE AMAZING HAIR, because I LOVE THIS COVER. This is all about a rock star drummer, the scandals she can't avoid and her gender-queer love interest. I CANNOT WAIT TO DIVE IN.

Suitors and SabotageMore than the hair, HOW PRETTY IS THAT LIPSTICK. (Oh, Jen also wrote Queens of Geek, which I LOVE)

3. Suitors and Sabotage by Cindey Antsey: I will currently be accepting any and all congratulations' on my evolution towards adult romances from YA ones because I'M GOING TO BE WENTY IN EIGHT MONTHS (freak out) The minute I read the synopsis for Cindy Antsey's Suitors and Sabotage, I KNEW I WANTED TO READ IT. It's about an architect and an aspiring artist in Victorian London and, in all honesty, is probably going to be my next read.

Zenith (The Androma Saga, #1)From Harper Collins India:

1. Zenith by Sasha Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings: If you don't already know it, I AM OBSESSED WITH BOOKS SET IN SPACE. I initially heard reviews RAVING about how good Zenith was and I put it on my TBR and when the lovely folks at Harper India sent it to me, I picked it up as soon as I could. I really liked some parts, but the pacing of the book could DEFINITELY have been better. You can read my review here.

LayoverFrom Penguin Random House International:

1. Layover by Emily Meyer and Amy Andelson: Honestly, I requested this book PURELY BECAUSE THIS COVER IS TOO GORGEOUS FOR WORDS. Also, I've never read a book centered in an airport before (with the exception of those movie endings where someone just happens to be leaving) and I'm quite excited to dive in!

AGAIN, HOW GORGEOUS IS THIS COVER?!
This Tiny Perfect World

From Edelweiss:

1. This Tiny Perfect World by Lauren Gibaldi: AGAIN, HOW ABSOLUTELY PERFECT IS THIS COVER? Why are covers so gorgeous? Scholarships, Theatre, Cute Boys and A BEAUTIFUL EXTERIOR. I am so excited.

I received this book as a part of my tour stop on the FFBC Blog Tour and a huge thank you to the FFBC and Harper Teen for getting me this book

What books have you stacked onto your shelves over the last week
Have you read any of my new books/ are you excited for any of them?
I'd ABSOLUTELY love to hear from you!
